Definition & Purpose:Shan hai zhen is a traditional Chinese protective talisman or warding plaque used primarily in Feng Shui and folk religious practices. Its core function is to pacify negative energies, ward off evil spirits, and protect home from misfortune. It acts as a specific type of "镇宅法器" (zhènzhái fǎqì), meaning a "house-protecting magical instrument."
Design & Symbolism:
The talisman typically features a visual depiction integrating mountains( shan) and seas or oceans (hai).
Mountains symbolize stability, permanence, and protective barriers.
Seas/Oceans represent the capacity to absorb, dissolve, or overcome chaos and tumultuous forces.
Inscriptions, celestial bodies (sun/moon), or deities may be added to enhance its protective power.
Cultural Significance:
It is recognized as part of China's Intangible Cultural Heritage , reflecting its deep roots in traditional spiritual and cultural practices.
Linguistic Note:
The term (zhen) means "to suppress," "to pacify," or "to guard/ward," clearly indicating its active protective function. Calling it a "town" (a common meaning of zhen) is a misinterpretation in this context; it refers solely to an object, not a place.
Material: brass
Main Hanging Locations:
Above the main door: Resolves externally rushing negative energy flow (Sha Qi).
Prominent location in the living room: Enhances the overall energy field (Qi) of the residence and attracts wealth and blessings.
Balcony/Windows: When targeting external physical Sha objects (like sharp angles or oppressive tall buildings), hang it on the exterior wall or tie it to the window frame, with the mirror surface facing the source of the Sha.
Special Scenarios: For internal door conflicts (e.g., bathroom door facing a bed), it can be hung tilted at a 45-degree angle above the lintel/door frame, avoiding direct alignment with the bedroom to prevent sleep disturbance.
Taboos and Precautions:
Avoid Incorrect Positions:
Do not face it directly towards a bedroom, as its strong energy may affect sleep.
Keep it away from directly above an altar; offset it by at least 30 cm.
Regular Maintenance:
Wipe the mirror surface with a coarse salt solution at the beginning of each month to prevent the accumulation of negative energies.
